Membership of the library service is free to everyone who lives, works or studies in Reading. You can join at any branch of the library by presenting proof of your name and current address. There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 13 years require a signature from their parent or guardian.
Joining Online
You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. Your membership card will be available for collection from the branch you select in the Nearest Branch field. You will need to bring in your proofs of address and signature when you collect the card.
Conditions of Membership
To borrow items or use computers you must present your library membership card.
Most items are loaned for 3 weeks (DVDs and Bestsellers are 1 week).
You may borrow up to thirty items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any Reading Libraries branch.
Items may be renewed four times without being seen as long as another user has not requested the item.
You can renew items online, by phone or in person.
Items may be returned at any branch of Reading Libraries.
Bookdrops are available at Central, Battle, Caversham, Palmer Park and Tilehurst libraries which can be used when the library is closed.
We do not charge overdue fines, but request that you return (or renew) by the due date so they can be used by other people - thank you.
Membership is suspended if you have overdue items and outstanding charges of over £10.
Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience and are only provided by email.
You can place your own reservations for free for items in stock with our library service via the public access catalogues at our branches or through the Reading Libraries online catalogue - or ask staff for assistance.
An inter-library loan service is available for those items which are at another library service. A small fee is charged for this service. You can also request items from the British Library for a further fee.
All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed.
All reservation, inter-library loan and lost membership card charges are non-refundable.
If you change your address or name please notify us immediately.
Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
