On assignment in Vienna, photographer Ian Jarret falls in love with a woman he meets by chance, Marian Esguard. Back in England, heleaves his wife and goes to meet Marian at an agreed rendezvous. She fails to show. Searching for her, he stumbles across a Dorset church- yard full of the gravestones of dead Esguards. He also meets a psychotherapist, Daphne Sanger. She is looking for a former patient who believes she been reincarnated.
