Caversham Bridge, looking upstream from the Reading bank, 1869. The masonry bridge is partly demolished, and the iron bridge partly constructed. A ferry is in operation, using a very large punt propelled by two men with long poles. There are two horse-drawn vehicles on the ferry, including a mil float belonging to the Mapledurham Dairy, and several foot passengers. In the foreground, at the wharf, are a number of rowing-boats, presumably offering a ferry service while the bridge is closed.
