Philip Yale Drew, the American actor, being greeted by supporters in Valpy Street, Reading, in 1929. Whilst playing at the Royal County Theatre, he was suspected of the murder of Alfred Oliver, a tobacconist. He is seen here on his way to the inquest, where he was subjected to rigorous and hostile cross-examination. Ultimately, no-one was ever brought to trial for the murder. 1920-1929
