The Upper Ship Hotel (later the Ship Hotel and the Royal County Hotel), Nos. 4, 6 and 8 Duke Street, Reading, seen from the end of King's Road, c. 1850. This is before the end of the road was moved northwards, to continue the line of King Street. The landlord's name, "Rose, " appears over the door, and by the archway into the yard is a sign saying "Great Western Railway Office." The road is very muddy, and a crossing-sweeper with his broom stands by the bollard to the left. 1850-1859: postcard by Berkshire County Library, with the caption, "Upper Ship Hotel, Duke Street, Reading, c. 1870." Copied from the album, "Views of Old Reading, " p. 16. Enlarged version at #1324564
