From the 20th century the Great Western Railway adopted the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement as its standard for express passenger services. The result of this policy was a range of classes designed to provide motive power over both main and secondary routes. The two most significant were perhaps the 'Castles' and the 'Kings'.
